Charles Melton Nine Popes 2006 Barossa Valley, Australia Smoky and spicy. Liquorice and cherry liquor. Perhaps lacking the power of the 2001. However, still sumptuous and displaying great purity of dark fruit. January 2009

Cranswick Lakefield Shiraz Cabernet 2011 South East Australia A bit whiffy - old drains. Thankfully this blows off in the glass. Commendably fresh blackcurrant fruit with spicy Shiraz coming through. Horrendously sweet mid-palate. Bit of chocolate. Way too sweet. August 2012

De Bortoli Vat 6 Verdelho SE Australia Fresh citrus. Lychee and honey comes though. Zippy fnish. May 2009

Franklin Tate Estates Shiraz 2010 Margaret River, Australia This smells of whichever flavour the black Wine Gum is and Black Forest Gateau. The palate is quite Sherbet Dippy with liquorice stick included. Not too big, hot, or overipe but definitely sweet fruit focused in style. March 2013

Grosset Springvale Riesling 2010 Clare Valley, Australia Feisty lime juice, pencil lead and and vanilla pod. Even a hint of exhaust fumes at this early stage. Apples too. Mouth-filling, with rapier like citrus tearing through your palate. Terrifyingly acidic. Quite loose-knit for this wine, not it's usual precision. Still sends shivers of delight down my spine though. December 2012

Hewtitson Lu Lu Sauvignon Blanc 2008  Fresh, pink grapefruit with a tropical note. Mango. Lively and very refreshing but could do with better fruit concentration. May 2009

Hewitson Ned and Henry Shiraz 2007 Barossa Valley, Australia Can you caramelize blueberries? I don't see why not, if so this is what they might smell like, perhaps with a hint of liquorice stick and a green streak of Mange-Tout pea running through the aromatics. Grabs hold of you on the palate with some intial blackberry fruit thenn fades away with nothing but tannin and grappa. January 2010

Hewitson Old Garden Mourvedre 1998 Barossa Valley, Australia From reputably the oldest Mourvedre vineyard in the world. Sweet raspberry fruit and cherry liquour. Lemon sherbet and sweet citrus zest. Soft and svelte in the mouth, some liquorice comes through on the palate which is sweet of fruit. Excellent length and whilst quite light an effortless concentration and depth of flavour that truly old vines seem to conjure up. Displays none of the funky aromas oft associated with Mourvedre, just a lingering note of aged leather. Quite captivating. March 2013

Hollick Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 Coonawarra, Australia Classic blackcurranty, minty, eucalyptus nose with underlying earthiness. Sandalwood. Medium/high acidity. Some citrus peel and earth. Rounded with firm tannins. A real sense of place. April 2009

Hollick Coonawarra Chardonnay 2007 (sample) Coonawarra, Australia Melon. Develops some lifted green apple. Rounded with zippy acidity. January 2009

Hollick Coonawarra Merlot 2007 (sample) Coonawarra, Australia Charred, tarry. Soft palate. Coca powder. Not enough fruit. Needs more oomph. January 2009

Hollick Red Ridge Semillon Chardonnay 2006 Coonawarra, Australia Toasty caramelized banana. Oxidized? Mouldy pineappple. My first encounter with a duff screwcap. January 2009

Hollick Shiraz Cabernet 2003 Coonawarra, Australia A happy marriage of blueberry and cassis. Menthol and Eucalyptus. Lively, approachable, fruity palate. Some finesse, not OTT. Tannins are sweet. Raspberry fruit finish. January 2009

Hollick Shiraz Cabernet 2005 Coonawarra, Australia Blueberries, mint, eucalyptus. Fresh, minty with quite noticeable acidity on the finish, but this doesn't detract from what is a very good wine. December 2009

Hollick Wratonbully Shiraz 2005 Coonawarra, Australia Alcoholic heat. Menthol, and blueberry. Silky and although appealing the alcohol really gets in the way of allowing this to flourish as perhaps it should/could. July 2009

Jim Barry The Lodge Hill Riesling 2007 Clare Valley, Australia Petrol and sherbet. Lime and lemon. Tangerine peel and pink grapefruit. Rasping acidity, but the finish round out nicely. May 2009

Kangaroo Hills Gewurztraminer 2007 SE Australia Confected lychee. Floral. January 2009

Larrikin Barossa Valley Shiraz 2006 Barossa Valley, Australia Blueberries and blackberry compote. Struck match and cooked animal fat. Thin, chocolaty, a little astringent. Faulty? December 2009

Majella The Musician Cabernet Shiraz 2010 Coonawarra, Australia Blackcurrant jam, mint and eucalyptus. Is this a caricature of itself? Sickly sweet and overripe. Heavily acidified?  September 2012

Moonvine Shiraz Cabernet Merlot 2007 McLaren Vale, Australia Made by Kimberly Clappis. Blueberry and liquorice, slightly meaty. Very rounded. The Cabernet comes through with blackcurrant and then chocolaty Merlot. June 2012

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2004 South Australia Blueberries and mint, but more of small pop than an explosion aromatically, at this stage. Very tightly wound. A little spice; clove and nutmeg and more blueberry fruit on the palate. Concentrated and rich with a ceratin elegance. Has hidden depths, I am certain of that. June 2009

R L Buller Fine Tawny NV Rutherglen, Australia Rich chocolate and fig roll. Delicious, moreish molasses and dried fruits leave a lasting impression on the palate. Lifted by fresh acidity. Give me a log fire, a comfey chair and switch of the alarm clock please. May 2009

R L Buller Calliope Rare Muscat Rutherglen, Australia Oh, this is outrageous, better even than the Tawny. Drinks shouldn't be allowed to be this delicious. Intoxicating. Pancakes with maple syrup. Rich, warming, not boozy. Sweet raisined fruit with honey and Christmas spices. Toasted nuts and orange zest. The alcohol is superbly hidden. Outstanding stuff. May 2009

Some Young Punks Naked on Rollerskates 2009 McLaren Vale, Australia. Fresh, fruity, feisty fun in a glass. Some sour cherry and white pepper, a little sherbet y on the finish if I’m being really mean, but this is not a wine to analyse, just enjoy - whilst naked and on rollerskates if the occasion permits. December 2012

Tahbilk Marsanne 2008 Victoria, Australia Honeysuckle, peaches and cream with a lick of limey citrus. Also an aged rieslingesque petrol component arrives adding complexity. Really, really fresh acidity, walking the line. Unique and delicious. Granny smith apple. Textured and long. November 2012

Thistledown The Basket Case Ancient Vine Shiraz 2009 Barossa Valley Plenty of depth of blueberry fruit and smoke. Pleasantly savoury palate, but expected better concentration perhaps. Sweet fruit comes through on the finish. September 2012

Thistledown The Vagabond Grenache Tempranillo 2011 South Australia Blueberries, white pepper and earth. Meaty. Ultra peppery palate which is quite light on its feet.  A touch boozy. September 2012

Trevelen Farm Riesling 2008 Great Southern, Australia Spiced orange peel and lemon nose. Lots of fresh, limey fruit on the palate. May 2009

Trevelen Farm Sweet Riesling 2008 Great Southern Australia Ripe lychee Gewurz-like fruit. Pear drops and a bit of Umbongo. Not overly sweet. May 2009
