Ata Rangi Sauvignon Blanc 2010 Martinborough, New Zealand Amazingly fresh. Intense, herbaceous aromatics; asparagus with a squeeze of lemon. Green pepper on the palate. Limey. Zingy and clean. October 2012

Ata Rangi Lismore Pinot Gris 2011 Martinborough, New Zealand Very closed indeed. Too cold perhaps. Restrained mid-weight palate. Delicately peachy, off-dry, precise but not a lot to show today. October 2012

Ata Rangi Craighall Chardonnay 2010 Martinborough, New Zealand Classy French oak. Butter. Again, quite closed, but terrific texture. It glides down and finishes long with sweet oak. Very polished, very classy. October 2012

Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir 2011 Martinborough, New Zealand Rhubarb and smoke. Green and bitter on the palate. A touch of crushed cranberry fruit, wants for concentration. Not right at all. A shocking disappointment. Perhaps needs time to fatten out in bottle? Shipped too recently? October 2012

Ata Rangi McCrone Vineyard Pinot Noir 2008 Martinborough, New Zealand Whoomph! Wonderfully fresh aromatics. With some leather sneaking in behind the sweet raspberry fruit and earthy/sweet liquorice root. Pure, not jammy, soft and sensual with enough tannin to deliver the required structure. Much more in the tank too. Impressive stuff. October 2012

Craggy Range Block 14 Syrah 2006 Gimblett Gravels, New Zealand Dark, very ripe plum and great lashing of white pepper adorn the nose of this splendid drink. Plums and dark berries on the palate with a genuine charm and restrained elegance shining through. Focused and fresh. Superb. January 2009

Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc 2010 Malborough, New Zealand Oh dear. This is extremley vegetal, beyond asparagus, cabbagey almost. Loose-knit palate and what nuances of tropical fruit are left in this wine are swiftly trampled by a bitter, astringent finish. Past it, surely. December 2012

Leung Estate Ma Maison Pinot Noir 2011 Martinborough, New Zealand Earth and glacé cherries. A bit of sweet shop but probably just manages to stay the right side of confected depending on your preferred style of this grape . Black cherry liqueur and chocolate truffle rounds off the event that is rich in fruit, impressively fleshy and sensual with some oak. There is quality here, though I would personally prefer that it was toned down a touch. Only a baby and deserves time to develop, but not a wine for Burgundy purists. December 2012

Neudorf Tom's Block Pinot Noir 2008 Nelson, New Zealand Handpicked, wild yeast fermented; 100% malolactic conversion. Matured in French oak, 15% new, for 12 months. No fining and minimal filtration. Lovely funky wood and subtle spice married with punchy, sour cherry fruit. Classy and restrained, velvety. Ripe, but dry. Wood and moss. There is something wonderfully opaque, natural and effortless here. December 2012

Terrace Heights Estate Pinot Noir 2006 Marlborough, New Zealand A pungent nose of raspberry and sharp cranberry. Touch of oak. Soft, smooth palate. Cherry-focused with hints of coffee. Refreshing and honest. Lingers nicely. December 2008

Terrace Heights Estate Viognier 2008 Marlborough, New Zealand First Vintage of this wine. Bursting with apricot then fresh granny smith apple., quite tart but relaxed by a creamy note. Peach and vanilla with some subtle spice. Fresh, refined not fat. January 2009

Wooing Tree Pinot Noir 2008 Central Otago, New Zealand Roast Turkey with all the trimmings. Pork and Sage stuffing. Raspberry and a touch of Soy. Good power and a nice sweet/savoury balance. Reserved and charming. November 2012
